1)Remove CV joint from the connector flange on both sides of the transaxle.
2)Pop out the center plug using a small screwdriver on each side. See photo #8.
3)Using a pair of snapring pliers, remove the snapring on the two differential shafts. See photo'#9.
4)Slide off the CV joint connector flanges.
5)Remove the 8 nuts around the final drive side plate. (Has clutch cable guide on it.)
6)Remove the side plate by tapping on the tabs and off-set places around the edge.
7)Lift out the differential. After you have removed the side plate it should look like photo #11, if not, you removed the wrong side plate first.
8)New round pinion retainer is unscrewed counterclockwise. It can be started by tapping loose with a soft drift and hammer, if you do not have the VW tool. See photo #12.
9)After separating the main shaft halves, and unbolting the trans-
mission case, the transmission can be pushed out of the main case as described in the TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY section.
10)Snaprings on the main & pinion shafts can be removed using appropriate pliers. See photo #13. Shafts can then be pressed out of the case using same method in TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY section.
Further disassembly is more easily carried out with transaxle bolted to a suitable transmission stand. (See special tools section for eng. - trans. stand.)
REMOVING DIFFERENTIAL
1)Position case so that the final drive side cover (sedan models have clutch cable guide on it) faces upward.
2)Remove the cover. There are off-set places on the side plate flanges you can tap against.
3)Lift out differential. (On swingaxle models it may lift out with the side cover, if it won't lift out, rotate case so that other side cover faces up, insert piece of wood through side cover and tap with a hammer against differential.)
4)Remove other side cover. Note: Always have a can or bucket handy to catch gear lube that is remaining in case.
5)On swingaxle models-the differential bearings may have come off during the preceeding work, make a note of the spacer-shim (between carrier flange and bearing)
dimension, if ring and pinion adjustment was correct this shim will be reused. See photo #7.
