1)Place the differential into a suitable holding device.
2)Remove lock wire (if equipped so).
3)Remove bolts that hold ring gear. If no holding means is available wedge a screwdriver between two of the gear bolts to keep the differential from turning while removing the bolts, See photo #14.
4)Lift off ring gear.
5)Drift out retainer pin for spyder gear shaft. (Before doing so, grind off pin head, to avoid cracking carrier when removing.)
6)Drive out differential spyder gear shaft and remove the two gears.
7) IRS differential must be split apart at ring gear flange to remove spyder gears and axle gears. See photo #19.
CLEAN AND INSPECT ALL PARTS
On Swing Axle Models:
1)Check axles on differential side for excess wear and gaulding to fulcrum plates.
2)Check clearance of axle in the differential side gears. Clearance should be: (photo #15) Rounded ends - .0012" - .004"
(photo #16) Flat sides and fulcrum plates - 0014" - .0096"
Use a feeler gauge for measurements.
3)Check for excessive wear of differential side gears. Axles and side gears are color coded into size groups of different tolerances Match replacements to color. The axle is marked with a painted ring. The gears are marked with a paint spot.
4)Inspect ring gear carrier for cracks.
5)If axle runout is measured, it should be done at the wheel bearing seat, .002" is maximum.
6)Check rounded surfaces on side plates for smoothness.
7)Inspect axle tube retainer plates for smoothness and straightness (to eliminate oil leaks) before assembly.
8) Check differential for scoring or gaulding of the spyder gear thrust surfaces. See photo #17. Also check spyder gears for wear.
9)Check plastic inserts for cracks and excessive wear spots - coat lightly with oil prior to assembly.
10) Always replace axle boots when in doubt, split typ are easiest
to use, but don't tighten permanently until car is on the ground with axles in normal position.
11)Examine wheel bearings for wear.
